Synopsis
Rangkasbitung: A Piece of Tale (Indonesian title: Dongeng Rangkas) is an initiative by community members who are deeply engaged with local issues and committed to documenting them through audiovisual media, to be distributed to the public as a shared learning resource. In its effort to capture local realities, the feature documentary format is considered one of the most effective means of presenting these issues and fostering collective awareness.
The production of Rangkasbitung: A Piece of Tale took place over three months (May–July 2011), involving documentary practitioners from Forum Lenteng, Jakarta, and Saidjah Forum, Rangkasbitung. Filming was conducted in Kampung Muara Village, the Ciujung River area, the town of Rangkasbitung, and the surroundings of Rangkasbitung Railway Station.
The film seeks to portray Rangkasbitung through everyday social activities, represented by two tofu vendors, Kiwong and Iron. These two figures can be read as portraits of post-1998 Reformasi youth living in a town approximately 120 kilometers from Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. The town—made famous by Multatuli’s writings—appears to have developed slowly amid the fervor of post-Reformasi construction and modernization.
Kiwong and Iron are ordinary young men who choose to make a living as tofu sellers while holding firmly to their aspirations. Kiwong dreams of becoming a better person, one who can provide a better life for his family. Iron, meanwhile, believes that music is a divine gift, and he is determined to continue cultivating his musical imagination within the underground scene.
Rangkasbitung: A Piece of Tale can be regarded as the only feature-length documentary produced in Rangkasbitung at the time. It is hoped that the film will serve as a catalyst for the growth of filmmaking practices in Rangkasbitung and its surrounding areas.
