Synopsis
Elesan Deq a Tutuq (Indonesian title: The Unfinished Stream) is Forum Lenteng’s fourth feature-length documentary. The film explores the lives of two generations, each represented by a central figure whose social roles are deeply embedded within the community of Pemenang, North Lombok. Through their parallel trajectories, the film examines the contemporary social landscape of the Sasak people as they confront the accelerating influx of global culture.
In Pemenang, the constant arrival and departure of foreign tourists brings with it a steady flow of information, values, and cultural practices. These external influences coexist with—at times blending into, at times colliding against—local traditions. Alongside economic change, tourists also introduce new lifestyles and ideological perspectives, reshaping everyday social relations and cultural negotiations within the community.
The spread of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago began around the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries, carried by religious teachers and missionaries known by various titles, including sheikh, cleric, ulama, and Tuan Guru. In Lombok, the designation Tuan Guru can be traced back to at least the eighteenth century.
Within Sasak society, Tuan Guru occupies a position of high social and moral authority. The title is conferred by the community upon individuals recognized for their profound Islamic knowledge, wisdom, personal integrity, and charismatic leadership. Religious life, social ethics, and everyday conduct are closely intertwined with the traditions governing how a Tuan Guru is expected to act within society. Through this lens, Elesan Deq a Tutuq reflects on continuity and transformation, faith and authority, as well as the tensions between inherited values and contemporary realities.
